Top 10 Tips on How To Make Colour Work for You!

Colours are an important part of our overall image. Colour can create so many feelings, some good, and some bad; that’s why your colourful first impression should be positive and long lasting.

So here are The Image Mistress Top 10 Tips on How to Make Colour Work for You:

1) The key to choosing colours is to make sure ‘you are wearing the colour and not the colour wearing you’ On occasion people may comment on a colour that you are wearing, and suggest that it really suits you. Perhaps though this is not the case, and the fact is that the person complimenting you has noticed the colour initially, as opposed to noticing you. A good way to test if a colour suits is to hold a colour up against your face, in front of a mirror. Close your eyes for 3 seconds then open you eyes. What did you notice first? The colour or you? If the colour suits, the answer is supposed to be you!

2) Not everyone can wear the colour black! In fact the people who actually suit the colour black are in the minority. But that does not mean you can never wear the colours that are not within you colour analysis palette. It simply means you have to work harder for your colour to suit i.e. wear the colour further away from your face/hair. Or wear a colour that you do suit in between, via a scarf, necklace or even a brooch.

3) It certainly is a simple trick, but can certainly work wonders. Use colour to your advantage by wearing darker tones on the body features you wish to minimise, and highlight your assets by wearing lighter coloured clothing.

4) By mixing and matching similar colours of clothing you can reduce the risk of being overpowered by your outfit choice. Certainly wear a bright colour, but perhaps consider accentuating it with a neutral as opposed to another bright coloured accessory.

5) You don’t have to wear every colour within your neutral and additional colour palette there will be colours you like and colours you don’t, so choose between which colours work best for you.

6) You may have a favourite colour that is not within your colour palette but don’t worry you can still wear it, either use it with accessories such as shoes, belts, bags or jewellery or wear in garments, but just make sure the colour is not worn too close to the face.

7) If you are uncertain about how to use your colour palette and what combinations to create, remember to keep it simple and seek inspiration from sources such as nature and your surroundings.

8) Don’t get weighed down regarding the whole colour psychology, yes certain colours do convey certain messages but you are better to make a lasting impression with a colour that works and suits you rather than a colour that doesn’t. There are of course shades of colours within your palette that can be used as alternatives to convey messages.

9) There are stunning pattern colour combinations, but you may not always find a pattern with your exact colours from your palette but don’t worry the pattern can still work as long as the more featured colours in the pattern are from your palette.

10) Creating a wardrobe that includes colours from your palette won’t happen instantly, start by planning your wardrobe with colours that will work and discard colours that won’t flatter. Then when you go out shopping take your palette with you and start to build your wardrobe with the colours that will suit.

The is now no excuse… but to wear colours that flatter you :)…

Great article! Our collections are frequently themed by colour and style, making it so much easier once you’ve identified which combinations in your own individual colour palette work for you. And we agree – colourful jewellery and accessories can make a great statement against a neutral look, whilst simple silver jewellery perfectly complements more colourful outfits.

Thanks so much Pia Jewellery!! I used to work in retail & we did the same with the jewellery we sold – everything arrange by colour & style, & I used to advise customers of the same fact that with a more colourful outfit, selecting the simpler metallic styles of accessories is the best option so as their outfit won’t overwhelm them! So pleased you enjoyed this article – it’s such a great compliment that you’ve liked our writing & style advice so much :) xoxo
